A High School Student Drinks Excessively With His Buddies, Suffers From An Alcohol Overdose, And Learns That Learning Something In Class Can Make A Difference
Andy was a high school freshman who frequently seemed to be living on the edge. Andy had an adventurous personality and typically wanted to do what his older brothers were doing. The basic difficulty with this was that all three of his brothers were at least 21 years old and were as a consequence within their legal rights to operate a car or truck and to ingest alcohol.
Andy, however, had a difficult time accepting the fact that as a fifteen-year-old teenager he should not be drinking. In fact, then again, Andy regularly drank with his high school friends after school, predominantly on the weekends.
One weekend, Andy made up his mind to drive around with some of his older friends. One of his guy friends was old enough to buy alcohol. After buying some wine, beer, and wine coolers, Andy and all of his cronies went to a park and drank for about three hours.
After drinking more or less five bottles of beer, Andy started to feel nauseous and then threw up. When he passed out on the tennis court, one of his buddies called 911 for immediate help. It was fortunate that the call for emergency help was made because when his buddies went to the hospital to see Andy, they discovered that Andy had been manifesting alcohol poisoning symptoms. More to the point, Andy had experienced an alcohol overdose.
After getting alcohol poisoning treatment, Andy was actually startled to find out that he had overdosed on alcohol because he "only" had more or less five or ten drinks. When he explained this to the attending physician at the hospital, conversely, the doctor notified Andy that drinking five or ten bottles of beer over a two or three hour time frame could in fact be quite a bit more alcohol than can be processed by the body. The physician further stated how extreme amounts of alcohol can cause the brain to shut down a person's breathing and that when this happens, an individual can cease to exist.
This was the first word of warning to Andy that he was drinking in a hazardous manner and that there are effects for such actions. The doctor told Andy that he was a fortunate young man because he almost lost his life from alcohol poisoning the previous night.
The physician also talked to Andy's parents and suggested that they get alcohol counseling for Andy. His parents were thrilled that Andy was safe and notified the physician that they would look into getting Andy alcohol treatment.
While conversing with his parents, Andy told them that there must be a good reason why he did not die and that he felt a sense of thanksgiving that he was still alive. He also told his parents that the odd part about the entire drinking situation was that he had learned about alcohol poisoning the previous six week grading period at school in health class.
At the time, what his health instructor, Mr. Johnson, was saying didn't seem to make too much sense to Andy. Now that he almost passed away, on the other hand, he felt that he should have listened more attentively in class and applied what he had learned to his life.
Andy notified his parents that he couldn't wait to go back to Mr. Johnson's classroom and apologize to Mr. Johnson for not paying more attention to something that was as pertinent as learning about alcohol poisoning.
