Linda and Frank have been dating for five-and-a-half years. They met while taking the same Spanish class at a relatively small, countryside, Church affiliated liberal arts college located in the Midwestern part of the United States. While they were essentially good friends at first, they eventually started to date when they were in their first year of college.

Given the fact that both of them came from very conventional backgrounds, neither one of them drank very much beyond the experimental stage when they first began dating. As the time went by, however, they began to go to more happy hours, football bashes, sorority and fraternity parties, and keg parties. As a result, they little by little began to drink increasingly more the longer they interacted with one another.

After they graduated, they both found jobs in a small city located about seventy miles from their undergraduate college. Then they finally decided to move into the same apartment with one another.

With any substantial adjustment in a person's life there is typically something that activates the particular transformation in question. For Linda and Frank the thought of buying a new house and having children was this "mechanism of change." Simply put, for the first time in their lives, Linda and Frank began to critically review their abusive drinking and the alcohol long term effects on their health. As an example, they began to wonder if they would ever experience an alcohol overdose due to their heavy drinking.

Would their heavy and irresponsible drinking adversely affect their ability to have children? How would they be able to continue spending nearly all of their money on drinking if they were to start saving for a new house?

All of these uncertainties clearly resulted in the same conclusion, namely that Linda and Frank needed to realize that they couldn't continue their irresponsible drinking if their goals, dreams, and aspirations were to be attained.

Once they settled upon this conclusion, they alerted their drinking friends about their their goal of buying or building a new house, about their plans to start a family, and about their marital plans. They also told their drinking friends that they still wanted to associate with them but that they would be drinking in strict moderation from this point forward so that they could start realizing their future plans, dreams, and hopes.

Shockingly, all of their buddies expressed relief because they too had been reevaluating their lives and concluded that their life-styles were much too frequently centered around drinking. They also felt that they would have to change substantially if they were to become more responsible and show more forethought for their careers, their health, and for their plans in the next twenty or twenty-five years.

After opening up to their buddies about their dreams, goals, and aspirations, Linda and Frank essentially started to have more meaningful relationships with all of their friends. The primary reason for this was the fact that all of them had a similar perspective regarding their excessive and heavy drinking and their short and long-term plans, aspirations, and goals.
