A Young Gentleman Needs Counseling For His Extreme Depression, Relationship Problems, And For His Substance Abuse
Around three months ago I had dinner with a forty-nine-year-old man named Benjamin who experiences extreme depression, has relationship problems, and who is drug and alcohol dependent. As stated by Benjamin, it is his alcohol and drug addiction and his intense depression that has had the most to do with his unceasing relationship difficulties.
As articulated by Benjamin, he is so crushed by his relationship problems and by both of his medical problems that he essentially has no energy to complete much of anything. What is particularly unfortunate about this is that earlier in his life, Benjamin managed to finish three semesters of graduate school in Spanish history.
Benjamin's situation makes me wonder if he is an example of a person who can look within and perceive his drinking problems and drug addiction and do something meaningful about these problems. Or, to the contrary, if he a person who has to hit rock-bottom before he gets addiction treatment that leads to long lasting sobriety.
It may be asked how rehab would help his alcohol and drug addiction. First of all, there are quite a few newly created doctor-prescribed medications that can help Benjamin avoid an alcohol or a drug relapse, help him through the alcohol and drug detox process, and help him through his withdrawal symptoms. Second, in rehab he could also learn more about his alcoholism symptoms and also about the diverse stages of alcoholism.
Third, Benjamin would learn to acknowledge the fact that there is utterly nothing constructive about drug abuse and abusive drinking. In a similar manner, he would also learn that involving himself in one or both of these unhealthy circumstances is the road to a premature death, poor work and school performance, financial difficulties, legal problems, deteriorating health, and shattered relationships. Fourth, counseling for his relationship problems and his depression might help him cope with these conditions more effectively and perhaps create less of a need for him to involve himself in addictive behavior. And finally, in rehab he could also learn more about the diverse symptoms of alcoholism that he has manifested.
Since Benjamin doesn't have the determination to do much of anything in his life, it is obvious that he desperately needs some hope for a more fulfilling existence. And the unfortunate thing is that hope is all around Benjamin if he could only get to the place in life to get the counseling he needs for his mental illness and addiction and stick with his treatment routine.
Benjamin is clearly too young to be dejected in life. He doesn't understand this at the moment but if he can learn how to stay away from alcohol and drugs via drug and alcohol rehab and get the counseling he requires for his intense depression, he can turn his life around and begin living with direction, passion, and with self-respect.
More positive relationships, positive change, self respect, and a wonderful life are certainly possibilities for Benjamin. But only if he can become inspired to obtain the medical rehab he needs, follow through with his treatment regimen, live his life in a healthy and addiction-free manner, and learn how to cultivate a more positive attitude about his existence.
