The importance of proper cardiovascular shoes is often underrated. Folks discuss doing the exercises right, planning out a workout program, eating right, hydrating properly, and all manner of of other work-out recommendations, but they hardly ever get to talk about good fitness club shoes. But ask any fitness trainer and they will inform you how important it's. Of course, if you're taking an aerobics class, then foot-wear doesn't matter. You will do all of your aerobic exercise on a padded mat, and wearing shoes is going to be discouraged, if not outright banned from the class in order to preserve the floor. But for many other cardio exercises (with swimming and a few other excepted) proper cardio shoes are a must. And as a fitness trainer will tell you, you just can not safeguard your feet without them.

The form of aerobic shoes depends on what you are doing for your workout. If you are a serious runner, you need to get sneakers. These are lighter than other versions of cardiovascular shoes, and concentrate padding for where runners need it. They are no good for playing tennis, for example, as they provide virtually no lateral ankle support. For tennis, or most other exercises that include more than just moving in a straight line, you require a different sort of cardio shoes: cross trainers or tennis shoes. Basically, both of these cardiovascular shoes are about the same thing - the contemporary version of the sports club shoe, with a good deal of padding, yet still a low top to allow some flexibility and movement at the ankle.

Of course, if you take part in basketball, you need bigger sturdier cardiovascular shoe to adequately protect your ankle. These are called high tops, and they run up all the way to the top of the ankle. They are great for this sport, because you're continually jumping high, bursting into abrupt sprints in different directions, and doing a lot of other things that can easily injure your ankle. They protect you from injuries more effectively than any other sort of cardiovascular shoes, and you will see nearly all basketball players wearing them. They are not good for the types of sprints that you've in tennis, however, and so are infrequently if ever worn by tennis players. Then again, if you are a cross country runner, you need different aerobic shoes entirely. They will be kind of a combination between running shoes and light hiking boots, with a somewhat light build and a good deal of traction on the bottom. If you go for a career in personal training this is just one of the aspects of fitness you should know all about - but that is another story completely.
