The reason why dog lovers hold this preconceived notion that small dogs are more difficult to train than medium sized or large breed dogs, I will never be able to know. Housebreaking a puppy, irrespective of its size should never be a problem.

Small dog training, is in no way different from training a puppy dog of any other size. While training any puppy will have its peculiarities, according to its breed, practically all other features remain the same, and the approach to training the pup should be the same, irrespective its size.

Having said that, I will make an exception here, and accept that small dog training may present issues in two areas, (1) Aggression and (2) Puppy crate training. However, this is not because the size of the breed is small, but in all case studies, because of the owner.

If a small breed puppy is aggressive and is difficult to train, or if a small breed pup cannot be bathroom trained or poses difficulties in being potty trained, it is the owner who has unknowingly contributed to this dilemma. Let us examine how and why.

Aggression.

Small dogs are loved because they are cute, they are like playthings. Owners get pleasure from having their pet sit on their laps. This indulgence is where the difficulty gets going. The natural aggressive trait of the canine, is to claim ownership over its sector, its food, even its owner; all canines want to be the alpha dog.

It is the hostile streak in the pup that causes it to climb on to the lap of its master, above all when there are lots of persons gathered in the room.

This is a blatant act of violence. Instead of reprimanding the animal, every owner bar no one, would cuddle the dog, despite the fact it jumped on to their lap without being asked to, developing the aggressive streak in the animal. By doing this the owner has seconded the dog's basic instinct to be the alpha dog.

Growling and getting angry at a a bigger size dog is another clear act of unwanted anger. To the owner, and even the onlookers, this is looked on as cute, just because one dog is very small while the other is big. Most owners cuddle the dog instead of admonishing it, when it displays this aggression towards a larger dog.

The above are but examples as to why small breed pups are aggressive, and definitely not because small dog training is complicated.

Bathroom Training

Owners are inclined to haul their small puppies around no matter where they are, even at home and that makes it practically impossible to toilet train them

It comes natural to the owners of miniature breed dogs to carry the animal to the area where the pooch should go to the bathroom and then carry it back into the house.

It is this habit of carrying the pooch to the place where is should do its business that is the cause of all complications. In addition, as the pup is as a general rule carried around so much it has no way of it suggesting to or alerting the owner that it has to go the toilet.

Small dog training commences with treating the dog as any other sized dog. They have to be taken to their bathroom area on a leash. If owners avoid carrying their miniature breed dogs they would have no troubles in training them.

Dog crate training, is the most exciting part of dog training, and so it should be, even in Small Dog Training.
