I have always loved models. When I was a child, I collected all versions of them. I had model airplanes, autos, boats, trains - you think of it I had it. Of course, die-cast models were very cool, but my favorites were the ones that you could put together. I had a 1 48 scale-model flying Fortress that was my pride-and-joy.

When I went to architectural school, I gave everything up. I figured that I couldn't make a career in models, and should do some-thing else that I liked. Little did I realize what awaited me. I in point of fact got a job in architectural model making! If you like working with models and have passable knowledge architecture, this is an astounding field to get into. When I make architectural scale models, I get to create complete minute worlds. Most of my architecture scale model clients don't want to just have a model of the building that they are proposing. They want a model that reveals the whole surrounding area together with the building. This gives background to the vision, and makes it look as if it has already sprung to life. However, adapting the architectural blue-print to an architecture scale model, designing the parts, making the molds, trimming the parts, and putting them all together, all still have to be done by peoples' hands. Nobody has puzzled out a way to automate the process.

I'm thankful that they haven't puzzled out a way to take the individual crafts-men away from the architecture scale-model. This job is a dream come true, and I'm glad it can not be done more effectively by equipment. I think it is going to be quite a long time before anyone puzzles out a different way to do it. If it were simply a matter of mass manufacturing architecture scale miniatures, it would be different. You could create one design and have it created by a piece of equipment. But each architecture scale-model is custom-ordered, and so each must be custom made.
